National Guard in Berkeley in 1969, at the time of the creation of People’s Park

Here’s a newly released set of striking shots of Berkeley under National Guard military occupation in the wake of creation of People’s Park in 1969, taken by the father of August Nicky Golden who served with Food Not Bombs at the park in the early days.

There are one or two of the actual park, people planting trees etc., though its mostly just the National Guard around town. According to the back of the slides they were developed May 1969. They represent a moment of one lifelong Berkeley resident’s experience at the protests.
